Nakhon Sri Thammarat once served as the capital of the Kingdom of Tambralinga. Later, in the 13th century, it came under Siamese influence. At that time, the city was known as Ligor. The influence of Sri Lankan Buddhism under the Siamese gave the town it's new name. The city was a major center of Buddhism during Srivijaya kingdom.
